Uther Pendragon proklamiert, dass die Königswürde ihm zusteht. Cornwall, sein Konkurrent, wetzt schon mal das Schwert. Nur mit Mühe schafft es der Zauberer Merlin, beide Seiten auf einen Waffenstillstand zu verpflichten. Danach löst er sein Versprechen Uther gegenüber ein und lässt ihn wie Cornwall aussehen, um Uther zu ermöglichen, mit Cornwalls Frau Igrayne zu schlafen, ohne dass die etwas davon bemerkt. Nur Tochter Morgana, die hellseherische Fähigkeiten besitzt, sieht, wie zur selben Stunde ihr Vater im Kampf gegen Uthers Mannen stirbt. Doch bevor Uther selbst stirbt, stößt er das verzauberte Schwert Excalibur in einen Stein. Der Prophezeiung nach ist nur der wahre König fähig, es herauszuziehen …
