Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Casting

Colin Firth was originally cast to voice Paddington and was announced when filming began in September 2013, but he voluntarily dropped out after principal photography wrapped in June 2014 because the studio felt his voice wasn't suitable for the character.

Casting

Ben Whishaw was signed the following month to replace Colin Firth as the voice of Paddington, recording his performance after filming had already finished.

Casting

In the Ukrainian dub of the film, Paddington was voiced by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who later became the president of Ukraine.

Origins

The film was first announced in September 2007, with David Heyman producing and Hamish McColl writing the screenplay, but further development did not happen until filming began in September 2013.

Filming

Although most Paddington Station scenes were filmed inside the real London Paddington station, the exterior establishing shot actually used the front entrance of nearby Marylebone Station.

Filming

The Browns' home exteriors in Windsor Gardens were shot in Chalcot Crescent in Primrose Hill, while Mr Gruber's shop was filmed inside a real antique shop on Portobello Road.

Filming

The fictional Tube station Westbourne Oak was actually a composite of three different real locations: the entrance hall at Maida Vale tube station, the escalators at St John's Wood tube station, and the disused Jubilee line platforms at Charing Cross tube station.

Filming

The Geographers' Guild exterior and entrance hall were filmed at the Reform Club on Pall Mall, while its other interior scenes were shot inside Hatfield House in Hertfordshire.

Effects

Paddington was created using a combination of motion capture and CGI animation, produced by the British visual effects company Framestore.

Music

Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams were commissioned to write an original song, 'Shine', specifically for the film's American release.

Trivia

With a budget of €38.5 million, Paddington became the most expensive film ever produced by the French production company StudioCanal.

Reception

The BBFC initially gave the film a PG certificate citing 'mild sex references' among other concerns, prompting director Paul King and creator Michael Bond to express surprise; after a challenge from the distributor, the BBFC revised the wording to 'innuendo' and clarified the 'mild bad language' as a single mumbled use of the word 'bloody'.
