After filming wrapped, The Weinstein Company paid less than $10 million to acquire the rights to distribute the film in the United States and select overseas territories.

For its American release, the film was the first movie from The Weinstein Company to be distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, as part of a three-year distribution deal between Weinstein and MGM that was later terminated three months early in late 2008.

On Rotten Tomatoes only 52% of 153 critics' reviews are positive, with the consensus criticizing the film for trying too hard to be clever in a Pulp Fiction-like way, while Metacritic gave it a 'mixed or average' score of 53/100 based on 36 critics; audiences polled by CinemaScore, however, graded it a B+.

The film grossed $56,308,881 worldwide against a $27 million budget, making it profitable for its US rights holder The Weinstein Company, and it later added over $26.8 million in home video sales.

Trivia

Lucky Number Slevin was one of the few films to be released on the short-lived HD-VMD home video format, in addition to standard DVD and Blu-ray editions.

Reception

In November 2023, amid Russia's designation of LGBT as an 'extremist organization,' the streaming platform Kinopoisk censored the film by bleeping out the word 'fairy' in the trailer, a scene in which Slevin and Boss discuss a character nicknamed 'Fairy.'
