Origins

Director Darren Lynn Bousman had originally written an unrelated script called The Desperate, which studios rejected for being too similar to Saw; producers realized it could be reworked as the basis for Saw II.

Origins

Bousman was brought to Toronto to direct the sequel within two months of the script being pitched, marking his feature directorial debut. Saw II was also the final film produced by Gregg Hoffman, who died shortly after its release.

Casting

Lyriq Bent originally auditioned for the role of Xavier Chavez but was cast as Daniel Rigg instead, reportedly to avoid the stereotype of casting an African-American actor as a drug dealer; the Xavier role was then offered to Henry Rollins, who backed out due to scheduling conflicts, before going to Franky G.

Shawnee Smith, who returned as Amanda Young, said she hadn't anticipated reprising the role since she didn't expect the first film to succeed; she was paid $150,000 plus a $100,000 bonus contingent on the film grossing over $50 million.

For the 'Needle Pit' trap, the crew modified 120,000 syringes over four days by replacing their metal tips with fiber-optic points, then added styrofoam and other materials since that amount still wasn't enough to fill the pit.

Effects

The Billy puppet, originally made by James Wan from household materials like paper towel rolls and papier-mâché, was upgraded for Saw II with remote-controlled eyes and a servo-driven mouth.

Filming

For the Furnace Trap, a set was built in three days from cement board and tin with removable sides, and a stunt performer coated in fire-retardant gel stood in for actor Timothy Burd during scenes involving real flames.
