Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

During pre-production, most of Dave Seville's scenes were rewritten, with much of Jason Lee's role being replaced by Zachary Levi's new character, Toby Seville.

Music

Composer David Newman, known for arranging the famous 20th Century Fox fanfare that debuted in Anastasia, wrote the film's score, taking over from Christopher Lennertz.

Effects

The visual effects and animation for the chipmunks were produced by Los Angeles-based studio Rhythm & Hues Studios.

Filming

A scene of Ian interacting with a rat stealing a muffin was carefully staged with trainers guiding the animal to hit its marks, and a prop radio was used to keep the rat safe.

Filming

An additional scene featuring costumed rats, monitored by American Humane, was filmed but ultimately excluded from the theatrical release.

Effects

In an elevator scene, a real Chihuahua interacted with actors carrying stuffed chipmunk props on their shoulders, which were later replaced with CGI chipmunks in post-production.

Filming

For the eagle scene, the bird was equipped with a monofilament line and guided by trainers using food rewards and bait sticks, while the moment where a chipmunk appears to kick the eagle was created entirely with CGI.

Reception

The film became the second highest-grossing film to never hit #1 at the box office, behind only My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and remains the highest-grossing film to never crack the box office top two.

Reception

Despite mixed reviews (21% on Rotten Tomatoes), the film scored 41/100 on Metacritic, making it the highest-rated live-action Chipmunks film on that site, and it won Favorite Movie at the 2010 Kids' Choice Awards.
