The Tunnel

The film is based on Bernhard Kellermann's 1913 novel The Tunnel, about the construction of a transatlantic tunnel between New York and London.

The novel had already been adapted three times before this British version: a 1915 German silent film called Der Tunnel, and two 1933 sound films (German and French versions) both directed by Curtis Bernhardt.

The Tunnel extensively reused footage from the 1933 German version of the story directed by Curtis Bernhardt.

A first draft of the screenplay was written by Sidney Gilliat but was discarded before production.

Additional dialogue was credited to Clemence Dane, a pseudonym of English novelist and playwright Winifred Ashton, who later won an Academy Award for Best Story for Perfect Strangers (1945).

Director Maurice Elvey used a Tatra 77, an advanced Czechoslovak automobile, in the film because he was taken with its futuristic look at the time.

The New York Times called the film an 'arresting and strikingly mounted British film' and 'An imaginative drama in the best Jules Verne tradition.'

The Monthly Film Bulletin praised the film's model shots, photography and lighting as first-class, while criticizing its dialogue as feeble and its romantic subplot as unconvincing.
