War Hunt

War Hunt features the film debuts of both Sydney Pollack and Tom Skerritt, and it was Robert Redford's first major film role.

Robert Redford and Sydney Pollack first met each other on the set of this film while both working as actors, later becoming frequent director-actor collaborators.

Francis Ford Coppola appears in the film in a small role as a truck driver.

The film was shot in just 15 days on a budget of only $250,000.

Associate producer Noel Black worked as an electrician on the production, reflecting the film's very low-budget, hands-on approach.

To hide the low budget, directors Denis and Terry Sanders, who had previously worked as second unit directors on the river sequences of The Night of the Hunter, shot most of War Hunt at night.

Producer Terry Sanders sent the script to the Pentagon hoping for Army technical assistance, but the Army objected to elements such as a private soldier acting as an independent killer with his commander's approval, a captain calling a sergeant an 'idiot', and scenes deemed too gruesome for good taste.

Although John Saxon received top billing, the film is best remembered today for Robert Redford's appearance.

The National Board of Review named War Hunt one of the ten best films of 1962, and it won the Silver Sail best feature film award at the 1962 Locarno International Film Festival.
