This film is the third and final installment of the Creature from the Black Lagoon trilogy, following Creature from the Black Lagoon and Revenge of the Creature.

It marked the directorial debut of John Sherwood, a longtime Universal-International assistant director, who got the job partly because Jack Arnold, director of the first two Creature films, recommended him to the studio.

The Gill-man was portrayed by two different performers: Don Megowan played the creature on land while Ricou Browning performed the underwater scenes.

Unlike the previous two entries in the series, The Creature Walks Among Us was not filmed in 3-D.

The underwater sequences were shot at Wakulla Springs in North Florida, a location that is now a state park, with additional scenes filmed at other Florida locations.

Principal photography took place over a short period, running from late August to mid-September 1955.

As with the original Creature from the Black Lagoon, the score was composed by Henry Mancini, who was under contract with Universal at the time.

The film is often cited as the final entry of the classic Universal Monsters era.
