Ironweed

Ironweed is based on William Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, with Kennedy himself adapting it for the screen.

Major portions of the film were shot on location in Albany, New York, the same city where the story is set.

The film starred Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep as the homeless couple Francis and Helen, supported by Carroll Baker, Michael O'Keefe, Diane Venora, Fred Gwynne, Nathan Lane, and Tom Waits.

Despite being a box-office bomb and receiving mixed reviews, Ironweed earned Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep Academy Award nominations for Best Actor and Best Actress respectively.

Critics particularly praised Meryl Streep's transformation into her character, with The New York Times' Janet Maslin calling her performance an 'uncanny' and 'stunning impersonation' of a woman of the streets.

Argentine director Héctor Babenco described his intent to emphasize what he called the 'spiritual dimensions' of Kennedy's novel, blending realistic and surreal scenes in the film.
