Poor Bibi - due to her bad marks in maths she has to spend the whole summer in the boarding school of Altenberg to scrape through a series of exams - otherwise she'd stay down in school, being forced to repeat the year. No camping, no white-water rafting, no vacation at all. So it doesn't surprise anyone that the young witch is quite disgruntled when arriving at Altenberg Castle. Her roommate is a touchy unpleassant fashion victim and headmaster Quirin Bartels is so muddle-headed that he can't even remember the names of his students properly. But then Bibi makes friends with Elea, a girl wheelchair-bound since a terrible accident where she also lost her beloved parents. Now Bibi is determined to help the sensitive Elea, searching a way to heal her from her palsy legs.

Origins

The screenplay was written by Elfie Donnelly, who also adapted the story into a tie-in book of the same name.

Casting

Sidonie von Krosigk reprises the title role of Bibi, having already played her in the first Bibi Blocksberg film, which was the most successful German film of 2002.

The character of Elea Eluanda later inspired her own spin-off series within the Bibi Blocksberg audio drama franchise.

Music

The film's main theme, composed by Enjott Schneider, strongly resembles John Williams' music for the Harry Potter films.

Filming

Most of the film was shot on the grounds of Landesschule Pforta, with the church of the former monastery used for the scenes set in the chamber of the blue owls.

Forming a pentagram in the crossing of the church for one scene caused heated disagreements between the school administration, the school's pastor and religion teacher, and the film crew.

Reception

The film was awarded Best Feature Film at the 22nd Chicago International Children's Film Festival.
