Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

Warner Bros. fast-tracked development after the success of Batman Forever, breaking the usual three-year gap between films and giving Schumacher a mandate to make the film even more toyetic than its predecessor, reportedly including toy companies in pre-production meetings.

Origins

Portions of Mr. Freeze's backstory were based on the Batman: The Animated Series episode 'Heart of Ice', written by Paul Dini.

Casting

Val Kilmer chose not to return as Batman, reportedly preferring to work on The Island of Dr. Moreau with Marlon Brando, prompting Schumacher to consider William Baldwin before casting George Clooney after seeing his performance in From Dusk till Dawn.

Casting

David Duchovny said he was considered for the role of Batman but joked he wasn't chosen because his nose was too big.

Casting

Ed Harris and Anthony Hopkins were considered for Mr. Freeze before the script was rewritten to accommodate Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was paid a $25 million salary for the role.

Casting

Demi Moore, Sharon Stone, and Julia Roberts were considered for Poison Ivy before Uma Thurman was cast, a role she took because she liked the character's femme fatale nature.

Casting

Alicia Silverstone was reported to have lost at least 10 pounds for the role of Batgirl and later spoke about the body shaming she faced during the film's promotion.

Filming

Because of time constraints, the costume department repurposed the Batsuit worn by Val Kilmer in Batman Forever for the film's third act.

Filming

Mr. Freeze's armor, made by armorer Terry English, cost an estimated $1.5 million, and Schwarzenegger's prosthetic makeup and wardrobe took six hours to apply each day, restricting his shooting time to a contracted 12 hours.

Filming

A blue LED placed in Schwarzenegger's mouth for the Mr. Freeze look had to be wrapped in balloons after battery acid started leaking into his mouth.

Filming

Chris O'Donnell revealed that despite spending time together off-set, he and Schwarzenegger never actually worked a single day together on set, as stand-ins were used when one actor was unavailable.

Filming

Filming was temporarily halted in fall 1996 when Mr. Freeze's blaster prop disappeared from the set, triggering a police investigation that culminated in the raid of a film memorabilia collector's home.

Filming

According to actor John Glover, Schumacher would sit on a crane with a megaphone before each take and yell, 'Remember, everyone, this is a cartoon.'

References

The film's molded muscle-and-nipple Batsuit design was directly referenced by director Zack Snyder for the Ozymandias costume in Watchmen (2009).

Reception

Batman & Robin is widely considered one of the worst films ever made, and its poor reception led Warner Bros. to cancel all future planned Batman films, including Schumacher's Batman Unchained, until Batman Begins revived the franchise in 2005.

Music

The Smashing Pumpkins' song 'The End Is the Beginning Is the End,' recorded for the film, won the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance at the 40th Annual Grammy Awards.

Trivia

George Clooney has repeatedly apologized for the film over the years, once telling Howard Stern it was 'physically' painful to watch his performance, and saying he refuses to let his wife Amal watch it.

Trivia

A planned fifth film, Batman Unchained, would have featured Scarecrow (to be played by Nicolas Cage) resurrecting a hallucinatory Joker, with Jack Nicholson set to reprise the role, but the project was scrapped after Batman & Robin's poor reception.

Una mamarrachada que cambia el histrionismo de Jim Carrey por el de Uma Turman y en vez de presentar a Robin lo hacen con Batichica. Eso si, como todas las de la saga sobra metraje y se hace laaaaaarga.
