Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

In early 1997, Warner Bros. approached Kevin Smith to script a Green Lantern film, but he turned it down, believing there were more suitable candidates. Quentin Tarantino was also at one point offered the chance to write and direct.

Origins

By 2004, Warner Bros. considered making Green Lantern an action comedy, with Robert Smigel completing a script intended to star Jack Black, but the studio dropped the idea after poor fan reaction online.

Origins

David S. Goyer was offered the choice to write and direct either a Green Lantern or a Flash film after impressing Warner Bros. with his Batman Begins script, and he chose to direct the latter instead.

Origins

Actor-writer Corey Reynolds pitched a trilogy concept called Green Lantern: Birth of a Hero focused on John Stewart, finishing the script in June 2007 with positive studio feedback, but Warner Bros. abandoned the project for unknown reasons.

Casting

Michael Fassbender, Henry Cavill, Chris Pine, Sam Worthington, Jon Hamm, Sebastian Stan, Nathan Fillion, Bradley Cooper, Justin Timberlake, and Jared Leto were all considered for the role of Hal Jordan before Ryan Reynolds was cast.

Casting

Bradley Cooper unsuccessfully auditioned for Hal Jordan because he kept imitating Christian Bale's Batman voice despite director Martin Campbell repeatedly asking him to tone it down.

Casting

Ryan Reynolds took the Green Lantern role in part because 20th Century Fox had no intention of making a Deadpool film at the time.

Casting

Taika Waititi said he was cast as Thomas Kalmaku after a Warner Bros. casting agent saw his performance in Boy, and noted the production had an opening for someone who wasn't 'white or black'.

Casting

Temuera Morrison said it took four to five hours to apply the prosthetic makeup for his character Abin Sur.

Filming

Filming was originally scheduled to begin in Australia at Fox Studios in November 2009 but was pushed back and relocated to Louisiana, with New Orleans doubling for the fictional Coast City.

Filming

Ryan Reynolds separated his shoulder and was in significant pain after being injured while shooting scenes in July 2010.

Filming

Reynolds later said filming was frustrating, describing it as a classic studio situation where production had a poster but no finished script, and director Martin Campbell admitted in 2021 that superhero movies were never his 'cup of tea' and that he shouldn't have directed the film.

Effects

Director Martin Campbell said the film contained 1,300 visual effects shots, and Warner Bros. raised the visual effects budget by $9 million during post-production, hiring additional studios to meet the release deadline.

Effects

The film underwent reshoots in January 2011 at Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles, and was converted to 3D during post-production.

References

A mid-credits scene shows Sinestro secretly taking the yellow ring, foreshadowing his corruption and a planned rebellion for a sequel that was ultimately cancelled after the film's poor reception.

References

The 2016 film Deadpool, also starring Ryan Reynolds, references Green Lantern multiple times, including a post-credits scene in Deadpool 2 where Deadpool travels back in time to kill Reynolds before he can make the film.

Reception

Green Lantern experienced a 66 percent box office decline in its second weekend, which was the largest second-weekend drop for a superhero film at the time, and it grossed only $237.2 million worldwide against a $200 million budget.
