Origins

21 Grams is the second installment of Alejandro González Iñárritu and writer Guillermo Arriaga's 'Trilogy of Death', preceded by Amores perros (2000) and followed by Babel (2006).

References

The title references a 1907 experiment that claimed to demonstrate the existence of the soul by measuring a small drop in body weight—about 21.3 grams—at the moment of death, an idea now dismissed by the scientific community as flawed.

Filming

Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto used different color casts for each character's storyline: cool colors for Paul, warm colors for Jack, and neutral tones for Cristina, to help viewers navigate the film's nonlinear structure.

Iñaritu y Arriaga convierten el ejercicio de estilo que era Amores Perros en un ejercicio de comomolismo extremo. Aquí todo está dirigido para epatar al espectador. La narración fragmentada, los saltos temporales e incluso las interpretaciones exageradamente tristes e intensas de sus protagonistas, todo, es un artificio ideado para que sepas que hay dos AUTORES de verdá detrás de todo. El equivalente cinematográfico de convertir el meme de los Simpson de "si, ya te vimos" en el culebrón definitivo. Lo curioso es que, a pesar de esto, todo funciona perfectamente y en vez de ser un coñazo jugando a ser indie es una película maravillosa repleta de matices. En fin, la hipotenusa.
