Kay and Jay reunite to provide our best, last and only line of defense against a sinister seductress who levels the toughest challenge yet to the MIB's untarnished mission statement – protecting Earth from the scum of the universe. It's been four years since the alien-seeking agents averted an intergalactic disaster of epic proportions. Now it's a race against the clock as Jay must convince Kay – who not only has absolutely no memory of his time spent with the MIB, but is also the only living person left with the expertise to save the galaxy – to reunite with the MIB before the earth submits to ultimate destruction.

Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

David Koepp was initially hired to write the screenplay but left to work on Spider-Man (2002) and Panic Room, leading to Robert Gordon taking over the script, with Barry Fanaro brought in later for rewrites.

Origins

Barry Fanaro added pop culture references to the script that Robert Gordon had deliberately avoided, and also condensed the film's first part to bring Agent K back into the story earlier.

Casting

Famke Janssen was originally cast as the villain Serleena but dropped out due to personal issues, and was replaced by Lara Flynn Boyle.

Casting

Michael Jackson wanted to appear in the film and insisted on cameoing in an actual Men in Black suit rather than as an alien, which convinced director Barry Sonnenfeld to cast him; it turned out to be Jackson's last feature film appearance before his death in 2009.

Casting

Agent L, played by Linda Fiorentino in the first film, was written out of the sequel via a brief mention that Agent J had her neuralyzed; producer Laurie MacDonald said the studio didn't consider her a permanent franchise character, and there were also reports that Fiorentino was difficult to work with and that Tommy Lee Jones refused to work with her again.

Filming

Principal photography ran from June 11 to September 23, 2001, and was suspended due to the September 11 attacks, which occurred during filming in New York City.

Filming

The film's climax was originally shot with the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in the background, but after the September 11 attacks the scene was completely reshot to take place at the Statue of Liberty instead, and other shots featuring the Twin Towers were edited or redone.

Effects

Sound editor Skip Lievsay used a Synclavier to clean up and improve the original neuralyzer sound effect from the first film, which had originally been created from the sound of a recycling strobe flash.

Effects

To create sounds for the Serleena creature, the sound crew placed tree branches inside a rubber membrane and pushed them around while adding water to generate organic squishing noises.

Effects

For the scene where Jeff the giant worm attacks a subway train, a specially designed vise was used to crush a real subway car so it would look as though it had been bitten in half.

Trivia

The film's home media release included an alternate ending in which Agent J is sent to the homeworld of the aliens from Grand Central Terminal.
