Producers began developing Always and Forever while To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You was still in production, hiring writer Katie Lovejoy to adapt Jenny Han's third novel and Michael Fimognari to direct.

Principal photography began in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on July 15, 2019, just two months after production on the second film had wrapped, even though the project was only formally announced in August 2019.

The film is the third and final installment of the To All the Boys trilogy, based on Jenny Han's 2017 novel Always and Forever, Lara Jean, and later led to a spin-off series titled XO, Kitty released in 2023.

The film was the most-watched title on Netflix during its debut weekend and was reportedly watched by 51 million households during its first quarter of release.

Rotten Tomatoes reported a 79% positive rating from 61 critics with an average score of 6.5/10, while Metacritic gave it a weighted average of 65 out of 100 based on 17 critics, indicating generally favorable reviews.
