The film's script was written by Lucio Fulci, who was initially chosen to direct it before Steno took over as director.

This film marked the last collaboration between actor Totò and Lucio Fulci.

Steno reused the priest character Don Ignazio, played by Cesare Fantoni, for the second time after previously featuring him in the film I tartassati.

The film was partly dubbed and partly recorded with direct sound, which means some characters, such as the one played by Nadia Gray, have different voices in different scenes.

Nadia Gray's character was dubbed by Rosetta Calavetta, whose expressive voice work is considered a strong example of vocal performance matching the actress's on-screen mimicry.

When the film was released in Italy in 1960, the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage required the removal of a nightclub scene featuring a belly dancer in the background, deemed offensive to morality; the scene was shortened by 19 meters to a total of 22 meters, per a censorship document signed by Minister Umberto Tupini on 28 September 1960.
