Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

Saw IV was the first film in the franchise not written by original creator Leigh Whannell, who was no longer interested in writing further Saw films; James Wan and Whannell remained involved only as executive producers.

Origins

The film's writers, Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, were discovered when an executive read their unrelated script The Midnight Man, which was originally considered as a possible prequel exploring a traumatic event in Jigsaw's early life before producers dropped that idea.

Origins

Dunstan and Melton pitched a trilogy concept intended to run from Saw IV through Saw VI, and many story ideas that were cut during Saw IV's rewrites were later recycled for Saw V.

Casting

David Hackl, production designer on the previous two Saw films, was originally offered the chance to direct Saw IV, but declined the day he received the offer because his wife was diagnosed with cancer; he was later given directing duties for Saw V and Saw VI instead.

Casting

Despite his character John Kramer/Jigsaw being killed off at the end of Saw III, Tobin Bell signed on in March 2007 to appear in both Saw IV and Saw V.

Filming

Principal photography for Saw IV took place over a short period from April 16 to May 3, 2007, in Toronto, on a production budget of $10 million.

Music

The film's theme song, titled 'I.V.', was written by Yoshiki and performed by the Japanese rock band X Japan.

Reception

Saw IV was not screened in advance for critics and went on to receive largely negative reviews, holding only a 19% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes despite grossing $139 million worldwide.
