Dating coach Alex 'Hitch' Hitchens mentors a bumbling client, Albert, who hopes to win the heart of the glamorous Allegra Cole. While Albert makes progress, Hitch faces his own romantic setbacks when proven techniques fail to work on Sara Melas, a tabloid reporter digging for dirt on Allegra Cole's love life. When Sara discovers Hitch's connection to Albert – now Allegra's boyfriend – it threatens to destroy both relationships.

Origins

The film's working title was 'The Last First Kiss,' a reference to a line Hitch delivers to Albert: 'Tomorrow night Allegra Cole could have her last first kiss.'

Casting

Will Smith said Eva Mendes was cast as the female lead partly because the studio feared backlash if a white actress played opposite him (interracial taboo) or if a black actress was cast, worrying two Black leads might alienate white audiences; a Latina lead was seen as a way to sidestep the issue.

Patton Oswalt was considered for the role of Albert Brennaman before Kevin James was ultimately cast.

The film was remade in Hindi as Partner in 2007, which led to a copyright infringement lawsuit from Sony Pictures against producers Sohail Khan and Parag Sanghvi, later resolved when Sony acquired the film's worldwide satellite rights.
