Filming

The film was shot entirely in Germany. The crossing of the Volga River was filmed on the Altdöberner See, a man-made lake near the village of Pritzen in Brandenburg.

A derelict factory in the village of Rüdersdorf was used to recreate the ruins of Stalingrad's tractor factory.

Filming

The massive outdoor set of Stalingrad's Red Square was built at Krampnitz, near Potsdam, on the site of a former Wehrmacht riding school that had later served as a Soviet barracks during the Cold War. Construction of this set began in October 1999 and took nearly five months to complete.

The final scene featuring waving coats is a direct reference to the works of Sergio Leone.

The film's score was composed and conducted by James Horner, with the soundtrack released on 31 March 2001.

Reception

The film premiered to unenthusiastic reviews in Russia, and on 7 May 2001, some Red Army Stalingrad veterans, offended by its inaccuracies and portrayal of the Red Army, expressed their displeasure in the State Duma and demanded the film be banned, though their request was denied.

Reception

The film was booed at the Berlinale film festival and received poor reviews in Germany, with critics accusing it of simplifying history and glorifying war. Director Jean-Jacques Annaud later said he would never present another film at Berlinale, calling it a 'slaughterhouse'.

Trivia

Historians have pointed out numerous inaccuracies in the film, including maps depicting a modern, post-Soviet Russia, Ukraine, and the Baltic states as independent countries, as well as showing Switzerland and Turkey being invaded by Nazi Germany, despite the story being set in 1942.
