Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

Development of a live-action Flintstones film began in 1985, going through numerous rejected scripts over nearly a decade, including a version by Mitch Markowitz reportedly inspired by The Grapes of Wrath about Fred and Barney seeking jobs during a depression.

Origins

Of the roughly 35 writers who worked on drafts over the years (a group nicknamed 'the Flintstone Eight' plus others), only Steven E. de Souza and the team of Jim Jennewein and Tom S. Parker ultimately received screenplay credit after Writers Guild arbitration.

Casting

Steven Spielberg decided John Goodman would play Fred Flintstone years before filming, announcing it publicly at the table read for the film Always; Goodman later said he felt 'sandbagged' into the role and even called Spielberg drunk about six months before shooting to try to back out.

Casting

John Candy, Jim Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Chevy Chase were all considered for Fred Flintstone, but the latter four were deemed too skinny for the role and a fat suit was considered inappropriate.

Casting

Danny DeVito was originally offered the role of Barney Rubble but turned it down, feeling he was too gruff for the character, and reportedly suggested Rick Moranis instead.

Casting

Sharon Stone was originally cast as Miss Stone but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts; the role was then offered to Nicole Kidman before going to Halle Berry.

Filming

Principal photography ran from May 17 to August 20, 1993, with filming taking place at Glen Canyon in Utah and at a full Bedrock street set built next to Vasquez Rocks in California, which visitors could tour before it was demolished.

Effects

Physical effects for Dino, the Dictabird and other prehistoric creatures were created by Jim Henson's Creature Shop, while Industrial Light & Magic handled the CGI after director Brian Levant was impressed by their dinosaur work on Jurassic Park.

Reception

Original series co-creator Joseph Barbera said in a 1997 interview that while he was impressed by the film's visuals, he felt the story 'wasn't as good as I could have made it.'

Reception

The film opened with a then-record $37.2 million over the 1994 Memorial Day weekend, surpassing Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, a record later broken by Mission: Impossible in 1996.
