Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

Blue Sky Studios began working on a sequel to Ice Age as early as June 2002, just months after the original film's March 2002 release.

Origins

The film was initially developed under the working title 'Ice Age 2' and was renamed 'Ice Age 2: The Meltdown' by June 2005, before the number was dropped for its final U.S. release title 'Ice Age: The Meltdown'; however, it was still promoted as 'Ice Age 2: The Meltdown' in the UK, Ireland, Mexico, and Australia.

Filming

Director Carlos Saldanha aimed to make the characters' eyes look alive rather than mechanical, wanting audiences to be able to tell what the characters were thinking just by looking into their eyes.

Filming

Although the returning characters came from the first film, they were completely remodeled for the sequel.

Music

Composer John Powell wrote entirely new music for the sequel, replacing the thematic material from the first film, and the score also incorporates Aram Khachaturian's Adagio from Spartacus during Scrat's heavenly vision sequence.

Music

Different regional versions of the film featured different theme songs, including 'The Other Side' by X!NK for the Flemish version, 'Real Love' by Lee Ryan for the UK version, and a Japanese theme song by Kaori Kishitani.

References

Scrat made a cameo appearance in the Family Guy episode 'Sibling Rivalry,' rendered in 3D despite the show normally being animated in 2D, with Chris Wedge reprising his role as Scrat's voice for the crossover.

Reception

Chris Meledandri, then president of 20th Century Fox Animation, credited the film's box office success partly to director Carlos Saldanha's method of using images rather than words to solve creative problems, a model that influenced Meledandri's decision to leave Fox and found Illumination Entertainment the following year.
