Love Life was announced in May 2019 as a straight-to-series order from WarnerMedia, conceived as a romantic comedy anthology with its first season consisting of ten episodes for HBO Max.

The series was created by Sam Boyd, who also wrote and directed the pilot episode, with Anna Kendrick, Paul Feig, Jessie Henderson, and Bridget Bedard serving as executive producers alongside him.

Anna Kendrick was cast in the lead role at the same time the series was first announced, before other cast members joined.

William Jackson Harper was announced in November 2020 to headline the second season, with Anna Kendrick returning only as a guest star reprising her role of Darby.

Keith David was cast as the narrator for season two, taking over from Lesley Manville, who had narrated the first season.

Filming for the first season began in August 2019 in Queens, New York.

The final scene of the season one finale was filmed on March 12, 2020, and production was shut down the very next day due to the COVID-19 pandemic; despite several planned days of pick-up shooting being cancelled, the season was still completed without those additional shots.

The two seasons received markedly different critical receptions: season one held a 63% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes with mixed reviews, while season two jumped to a 95% approval rating and was praised for William Jackson Harper's performance.

After being canceled in December 2022 and removed from HBO Max, the series was later acquired by Netflix and released there in August 2025.
