In an isolated and inaccessible Antarctic research station in which winter has fallen on the South Pole and the sun will soon disappear for the next six months, a small team, known as the Winterers, remain at the Polaris VI Antarctic Research Station to continue their innovative research. Renowned biologist Arthur Wilde is determined to find a solution to climate change, but his quest turns into a nightmare when several of his esteemed scientists suddenly begin to die.

Trivia & behind the scenes

Filming

Although the series is set in Antarctica, the base set scenes were actually filmed on a set in Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, while the outdoor scenes were shot in Iceland.

Origins

In October 2021, The Mediapro Studio announced it was preparing a second season set on a container ship, again directed by Jorge Dorado and written by Mariano Baselga and Jordi Galceran.

A third season was announced as being in development in October 2023 and was confirmed in December of that year as the series' final season.

Filming

Filming for the third and final season lasted from mid-December to late January 2024.

The Head is a Spanish-Japanese English-language co-production, originally produced for HBO Asia and Hulu Japan, reflecting its international cast and crew.

Reception

After premiering internationally in summer 2020, the series later reached US audiences on HBO Max starting February 4, 2021, and UK/Ireland/German-speaking Europe via Starzplay from February 7, 2021.
