The reboot series was greenlit by Apple TV+ after the success of the Fraggle Rock: Rock On! shorts released in April 2020, leading to a deal with The Jim Henson Company announced on May 26, 2020.

During pre-production in late 2020, the series had the working title 'Raphanis,' derived from the Latin word for 'radish,' before the official title Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock was revealed in a trailer in November 2021.

Filming took place in-studio at the Calgary Film Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, beginning on January 25, 2021, and wrapping in June of that year.
