The show was created by then-married couple Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfeld, who also both act in the series (Sinclair as The Guy, Blichfeld as Becky).

The Guy's real name, Rufus, is only revealed in the series' final episode.

Ben Sinclair cited the TV shows Six Feet Under and Party Down as inspirations for the original web series.

Each web series episode reportedly cost less than $1,000 to make.

In June 2014 Vimeo announced it would financially back new episodes through its Vimeo on Demand platform, funding six web episodes before HBO picked up the show; three were released on November 11, 2014, and the other three on February 5, 2015.

The series features numerous real-life guest appearances playing themselves, including Hannibal Buress, Brett Gelman, Lena Dunham (filming an episode of Girls), Ira Glass, Nick Kroll, Rebecca Hall, Gaby Hoffmann, Temple Grandin, and Martha Stewart.

When the show transitioned from a web series (shot in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens with episodes of 5 to 20 minutes) to HBO, episodes expanded to the standard half-hour television format while retaining on-location shooting.

Dan Stevens appeared in the web series episode "Rachel" before returning for three episodes of the HBO series as the cross-dressing screenwriter Colin.
