The series was originally announced in 2020 under the working title 'The Surrealtor' before being renamed SurrealEstate.

The show was produced by Blue Ice Pictures and filmed in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Lead actor Tim Rozon previously starred for four seasons in Wynonna Earp (2016–2021) alongside Melanie Scrofano, who then joined SurrealEstate as a director for two episodes and made a guest appearance in the first season.

Tim Rozon and Sarah Levy, who both starred in the main cast of Schitt's Creek, reunited as co-stars in SurrealEstate, with Levy playing Susan Ireland.

In October 2021, series creator George Olsen announced that Syfy had canceled the series after just one season, but he stated he would try to find it a new home.

In May 2022, Syfy reversed its cancellation decision and renewed the series for a second season, which premiered in October 2023.

In March 2022, Leonine Studios sold the rights to SurrealEstate to more than 160 territories worldwide.

The series was ultimately canceled for good in December 2025, as confirmed by showrunner George R. Olson, after three seasons.
