Netflix ordered a first season of ten episodes on October 3, 2018, with Ben Hoffman creating the show and Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Seth Cohen, M. Dickson and Jake Johnson serving as executive producers.

Before landing at Netflix, the show was pitched to MTV, Fox, FX, Comedy Central, HBO and Adult Swim, all of which turned it down.

Jake Johnson was confirmed as the star at the time of the series order announcement in October 2018, while Natasha Leggero, Rob Riggle, Ron Funches, Cleo King and A. D. Miles joined the starring cast in July 2020.

Series creator Ben Hoffman also voices a recurring character, Time Bomb, a redneck player implied to be from an inbred family.

Hoops is the last show released under the 20th Century Fox Television label, as the company was renamed 20th Television in August 2020, the same month the series premiered.

The series was cancelled by Netflix on December 8, 2020, after just one season.

Hoops received extremely negative reviews, holding a 14% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 35 out of 100.

Critic Stuart Jeffries of The Guardian called it a "puerile comedy ... perfect for Trump's America" and described it as more "toxically retrograde" than the sitcom Love Thy Neighbour.
