The show's title comes from 'Domina', the female version of the Ancient Roman title 'Dominus' (sovereignty), from which the word 'dominate' originates.

Filming resumed at the Cinecittà studios in Rome in July 2020 after the original 2019 start date was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The series was created and principally written by Simon Burke, with Australian filmmaker Claire McCarthy serving as lead director.

Although filmed with strong Italian roots at Cinecittà, Domina is an international co-production for Sky Atlantic in Italy and the UK, as noted by Sky Italia executive Nicola Maccanico.

Historian Tom Holland, writing in The Times, compared the show's opening episodes to Game of Thrones, calling it 'Game of Romans' alongside Financial Times critic Suzi Feay, while praising its focus on the previously under-dramatized 20s BC period of Augustus's reign.

On Rotten Tomatoes the series holds an 82% approval rating based on 11 reviews, with an average score of 6.7/10, while The Telegraph and The Standard both gave the opening episode three stars out of five.

The series was renewed for a second season by Epix (later renamed MGM+) in February 2022, but was ultimately cancelled after two seasons in April 2024.
