Monsterland

Monsterland is based on the short story collection North American Lake Monsters: Stories by Nathan Ballingrud, and was created by Mary Laws, who also served as an executive producer on the series.

Hulu gave the series an eight-episode order in May 2019, with Annapurna Television attached as producer and Babak Anvari and Lucan Toh serving as executive producers alongside Mary Laws.

Babak Anvari, one of the executive producers, was also set to direct one episode of the series.

Kaitlyn Dever and Jonathan Tucker were the first actors announced for the cast in November 2019, both appearing in the first episode.

Mike Colter joined the cast in February 2020, followed by Kelly Marie Tran and Taylor Schilling in July 2020, and Nicole Beharie, Adepero Oduye, Roberta Colindrez, Charlie Tahan and Hamish Linklater in August 2020.

The series was filmed in Kingston, New York, in November 2019.

Monsterland received an 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 28 reviews, with critics praising its cast and crew despite a lack of a strong narrative through line.

Metacritic gave the series a weighted average score of 63 out of 100 based on five reviews, indicating 'generally favorable reviews'.
