Tabitha

Tabitha originated as a pilot that aired on ABC on April 24, 1976, starring Liberty Williams as Tabitha, but this pilot failed to sell the series.

In the original 1976 pilot, Tabitha's brother Adam (played by Bruce Kimmel) was a full-fledged mischievous warlock, whereas for the series he was rewritten as a mortal who disapproved of Tabitha's witchcraft, mirroring the role their father Darrin played on Bewitched.

In the first pilot, Tabitha worked as an editorial assistant for a fictional magazine in San Francisco and had a boyfriend named Cliff, in a storyline that closely echoed the Bewitched pilot 'I, Darrin, Take This Witch, Samantha.'

A second pilot was produced starring Lisa Hartman, who replaced Liberty Williams in the title role, and this version convinced ABC to buy the series.

The original 1976 pilot was directed by Bewitched producer/director William Asher and produced by Ashmont Productions, the company he owned with Elizabeth Montgomery; Ashmont was shut down after the pilot's production.

William Asher had little involvement with the revised series aside from directing the few episodes featuring returning Bewitched actors Bernard Fox, George Tobias, and Sandra Gould reprising their original characters, otherwise serving only as an advisor.

The series' theme song, 'It Could Be Magic,' was written by Jeff Barry and performed by star Lisa Hartman herself.

The opening credits incorporated actual footage and photographs of twin sisters Diane Murphy and Erin Murphy, who had played Tabitha as a toddler on the original Bewitched series.

Despite initially good ratings, the show's numbers dropped after ABC moved it from Saturdays to the notorious Friday night 'death slot' in January 1978, and it finished the season ranked 81st out of 104 programs before being canceled after twelve episodes.
