Tarzan

This 1966-1968 NBC series reimagined Tarzan, played by Ron Ely, as a well-educated man who grew tired of civilization and returned to the jungle, deliberately excluding the character of Jane as part of a 'new look' for the apeman introduced by executive producer Sy Weintraub in earlier films.

The first five episodes of the series (numbers 1-4 and 7 in broadcast order) were filmed in Brazil before production relocated to Mexico.

The opening scene of the series was filmed at Iguazu Falls.

Maurice Evans made four recurring guest appearances as retired Brigadier Sir Basil Bertram, a hero of the Battle of the Bulge, while Julie Harris guest-starred four times as missionary Charity Jones.

The show used three different theme tunes across its two seasons; the most popular, 'Tarzan's March' by Sydney Lee and Walter Greene, was dropped from Season Two's opening and closing credits.

'Tarzan's March' was covered by several artists, including Al Hirt & His Orchestra, Marty Manning & The Cheetahs, and Lawrence Welk & His Orchestra, and the British ska band Madness recorded a version with spoken parts for their debut album One Step Beyond.....

British company Airfix released a line of 1/72nd scale plastic figures based on the series' characters.

The series continued to air in syndication for decades, running on the Heroes & Icons network on Saturday mornings until September 2018, and was celebrated with a 50th anniversary marathon on the Decades TV network in 2016.
