Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

Dream On was created by Marta Kauffman and David Crane, who later went on to create Friends, and both also served as producers on the show.

References

The series distinctively interjected clips from older black-and-white television series and movies to express protagonist Martin Tupper's inner thoughts and feelings, a device that became one of its signature quirks.

Trivia

Dream On was one of the first American sitcoms to feature uncensored profanity and nudity, which was notable for television at the time.

Filming

Two versions of each episode were filmed: the original HBO version with nudity and strong language, and a tamer, censored version without them.

Reception

The tamer, edited version of the show aired on Fox television from January 8 to July 3, 1995, while a similarly bowdlerized version aired on Comedy Central from 1996 to 1999 with language and nudity edited out.

Casting

Executive producer John Landis, known primarily as a film director, also directed several episodes of the series.

Reception

In 2025, Dream On began streaming on The Roku Channel, marking the first time the series had ever been available for streaming.

Trivia

Only seasons one and two of Dream On have been released on DVD in regions 1 and 2; seasons three through six have never received a home media release.
