Witch Hunter Robin

The series was created with an original concept credited to Hajime Yatate and director Shūkō Murase, and is set in a version of Japan blended with a medieval European aesthetic, evoking the historical European witch hunts.

The series is set roughly 320 to 400 years after the historical European witch hunts of the 17th-18th centuries, with an in-story receipt dated February 12, 2056 suggesting a mid-21st century setting.

A live-action adaptation of Witch Hunter Robin was announced in April 2004 by the SciFi Channel, to be produced by Roy Lee and Doug Davison (producers of The Ring), but the project was later dropped and never released.

The English dub's ADR script was criticized by reviewer Ryan Matthews for containing clumsy wording and mid-sentence stops, suggesting it was written without matching the animation's timing.

Anime News Network critic Zac Bertschy called it 'one of the best anime series of all time and certainly the best one this year,' praising its soundtrack and mature, evenly-paced storytelling despite its mostly black-and-gray color palette.

Witch Hunter Robin ranked second among top anime properties for the first quarter of 2004 and sixth for the third quarter of that year.

The opening theme 'Shell' and ending theme 'half pain' were both performed by singer Bana (Chino Takayanagi), with music composed by Taku Iwasaki; a shortened guitar-only version of the opening theme was repurposed as the ending for episode 15, 'Time to Say Goodbye'.

At the 2003 Metreon Festival of Anime in San Francisco, English voice actress Kari Wahlgren, who voiced protagonist Robin Sena, took part in a Q&A and autograph session for the show's North American debut.
