Flatbush Misdemeanors is based on a 2017 digital series of the same name created by Kevin Iso and Dan Perlman, who later developed it into the Showtime series.

Showtime gave the series a straight-to-series order in October 2020, consisting of ten episodes, without requiring a pilot.

Kristin Dodson was cast as a series regular on March 12, 2021, just months before the show's premiere, followed shortly by Hassan Johnson joining the cast on March 25, 2021.

The show's creators, Kevin Iso and Dan Perlman, also star as the two lead characters, Kevin and Dan, essentially playing versions of themselves.

The series was renewed for a second season in August 2021 but was then cancelled after just two seasons in September 2022.

The first episode of the series was released for free on YouTube in addition to its Showtime premiere, a move aimed at broadening its audience.

The show received widespread critical praise for its authentic portrayal of the Flatbush, Brooklyn neighborhood, with outlets like Variety and TV Guide highlighting its 'richly drawn world' and calling it one of the best shows of 2021.
