Lovestruck in the City is the first instalment in the multi-part 'City Couple's Way of Love' project, and was presented in an interview format with six individuals discussing their dating experiences.

The series was originally planned as a 16-episode drama but was extended to 17 episodes on February 4, 2021, in order to include the romance of police officer Oh Dong-sik, played by Choi Min-ho.

Kim Ji-won and Ji Chang-wook were first reported to be in talks to star in the series in July 2020, before being officially confirmed as the leads in September 2020, when Kim Min-seok and So Joo-yeon also joined the cast in supporting roles.

The script reading for the series took place in September 2020.

Filming was temporarily suspended on November 24, 2020, after an extra tested positive for COVID-19; Kim Ji-won was later confirmed to have tested negative for the virus on November 26.

The series' premiere, originally scheduled for December 8, 2020, was postponed to December 22, 2020, due to COVID-19 concerns and safety considerations for cast and staff.

To promote the series, cast members Ji Chang-wook, Kim Min-seok, and Ryu Kyung-soo appeared on the 260th episode of the variety program Knowing Bros, which aired on December 19, 2020.

Critic Joel Keller of Decider compared the dynamic between lead characters Jae-won and Eun-o to that of Ross and Rachel from the American sitcom Friends, describing the show as a light rom-com accessible to fans of Western sitcoms.
