The series was created by Brian Watkins and is executive produced by a team including Josh Brolin, Amy Seimetz, and Brad Pitt through his production company Plan B Entertainment.

Josh Brolin signed on to star in Outer Range in February 2020, marking his first television series role in nearly 20 years.

In December 2020, Lewis Pullman, Noah Reid, Shaun Sipos, and Isabel Arraiza joined the cast alongside Brolin, Imogen Poots, Lili Taylor, Tamara Podemski, and Tom Pelphrey.

For the second season, Charles Murray took over as showrunner from series creator Brian Watkins.

New actors Christian James, Megan West, Daniel Abeles, Kimberly Guerrero, and Monette Moio were cast in recurring roles for season 2, including younger versions of established characters like Royal Abbott and Wayne Tillerson.

The first season was filmed over the course of eight months in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

The series' score was composed by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans, with the soundtrack released by Milan Records.

Despite receiving generally positive reviews, especially for its second season which scored 92% on Rotten Tomatoes compared to 79% for season one, the series was canceled after two seasons in July 2024.
