Landscapers was announced in December 2019 as a true-crime miniseries written by Ed Sinclair, who created the series specifically with Olivia Colman in mind for the role of Susan Edwards.

The project was originally set to be directed and executive produced by Alexander Payne, but he exited in October 2020 due to scheduling conflicts and was replaced by Will Sharpe.

David Thewlis joined the cast as Christopher Edwards in March 2021, after which principal photography began that same month in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, the real-life setting of the crimes.

For a flashback scene depicting the leads as much younger versions of themselves, no visual effects or special makeup were used to age them down; David Thewlis explained they simply used wigs.

Both Olivia Colman and David Thewlis publicly stated they never doubted the real-life couple's guilt in the murders, but felt the series aimed to foster empathy and understanding rather than question their culpability.

The series premiered to strong critical acclaim, holding a 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 46 reviews and a score of 79 on Metacritic, with particular praise for Colman and Thewlis's performances.
