The series is a legacy sequel to the 1989 film Turner & Hooch, created and written by executive producer Matt Nix for Disney+.

Back in 1990, Touchstone Television developed a TV pilot based on the original film, starring Thomas F. Wilson as Scott Turner and Beasley the Dog reprising his role as Hooch, but it was never picked up as a series and instead aired as part of The Magical World of Disney in July 1990.

The role of Hooch was played by five different dogs of the same breed: Arnie, Hammer, Obi, Cyd, and Mya.

Reginald VelJohnson, who played David Sutton, is the only actor from the original 1989 film to appear in the series.

Scott Turner's mother, Dr. Emily Turner, had previously been portrayed by Mare Winningham in the original film and by Wendee Pratt in the 1990 pilot before being played by Sheila Kelley in the series.

Filming was originally scheduled to begin on April 27, 2020, in Vancouver, British Columbia, but was delayed and actually started on September 22, 2020, wrapping on April 19, 2021.

Actress Lyndsy Fonseca filmed Turner & Hooch concurrently with Fox's 9-1-1: Lone Star.

The series was released earlier than initially planned and moved to a Wednesday premiere date after Disney+ decided to shift most original premieres to Wednesdays following the success of Loki's Wednesday release.

Stunt performer Jon Kralt was nominated for a 2022 Leo Award for Best Stunt Performance in a Dramatic Series for his work on the show.

The series was canceled by Disney+ after just one season and was later removed entirely from the platform on May 26, 2023, as part of a content purge and cost-cutting initiative under CEO Bob Iger.
