The series was originally titled 'Sulphur Springs' and was first developed as a pilot for Disney Channel before being pitched to Disney+ with a cast-contingent series order.

After entering pre-production for Disney+, the casting process was unsuccessful and Disney+ ultimately passed on the series.

By May 2019, development moved back from Disney+ to Disney Channel, and the project continued as a pilot with only two roles filled at that point.

The show was originally developed as an hour-long series but was later shortened to a half-hour format before Disney Channel officially ordered it for an eleven-episode first season in October 2019.

Filming began in Louisiana toward the end of 2019 but was paused on February 23, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic; production resumed and was completed for the season between October 5 and November 6, 2020.

Several actors play dual roles as younger and older versions of characters across different time periods, including Kyliegh Curran as both Harper and her great-grandmother Daisy Tremont as a young girl, and Eugene Byrd playing an adult version of Sam Tremont, a character also portrayed by Ethan Hutchison as a boy.

The series marked a first for a Disney Channel show by receiving a 'high-profile' release schedule on Disney+, with the first five episodes made available there on February 26, 2021, shortly after the television premiere.

The series premiered on Disney Channel on January 15, 2021, with three episodes combined into a one-hour special.
