The series was created by Charles Pratt Jr. and produced by Aaron Spelling, and was initially marketed as a 'Dynasty for the new millennium,' attempting to emulate the style of Spelling's earlier hit series.

The casting of leads Casper Van Dien and Perry King was announced in February 2000, with additional soap opera veterans Yasmine Bleeth, Victoria Principal, and Jack Wagner later joining the cast.

Thirteen episodes were filmed for the series, but only eleven were actually aired, with the remaining episodes never broadcast in the United States.

Titans premiered on October 4, 2000, right before the season two premiere of The West Wing, and drew 11.6 million viewers for its debut, though ratings quickly declined for the following episodes.

After being moved from Wednesdays to Mondays for its ninth episode, the show only attracted 6.6 million viewers, and NBC announced the next day that it would not order additional episodes.

Critical reception was largely negative, with David Zurawik of The Baltimore Sun calling the acting 'stunningly bad' while singling out Victoria Principal as 'the one saving grace on the show'.

Despite low ratings, Entertainment Weekly's Kristen Baldwin called the show's cancellation 'a mistake,' arguing that its viewership would have grown over time.

A media ad buying executive, Bob Flood, admitted to Variety after the cancellation that 'We thought Titans would be better than it turned out to be.'
