Vivy -Fluorite Eye's Song-

The project originated at the end of 2016 when Wit Studio's Joji Wada approached his former Production I.G colleague Eiji Umehara to create an original anime.

Because Umehara had never been in charge of a series composition before, he asked Tappei Nagatsuki (author of Re:Zero) to first write original novels for each episode before the anime script was created, a working method Umehara was used to from his experience on the Re:Zero anime.

From 2017 to late 2018, Nagatsuki and Umehara divided episodes between them according to a series-wide composition outline, each writing their assigned episodes as novels and then refining each other's drafts; these novels were treated only as a blueprint, since the actual anime was substantially reworked afterward with input from the director and producers.

The team deliberately simplified the science-fiction concepts so that a broad audience could enjoy the drama, avoiding overly complex settings; for instance, the original novels based AI behavior on the Three Laws of Robotics plus an added Zeroth Law, but the anime replaced this with the simpler concept of each AI having a single 'mission'.

Wada brought the near-finished first draft of the novel to Aniplex in 2017, where Yuma Takahashi became the producer, and director Shinpei Ezaki was chosen because he too was a former Production I.G colleague of Wada's.

Character designs were decided through a competition, and Yuichi Takahashi was selected on Ezaki's recommendation.

Almost all of the opening, ending, background score, and insert songs were composed by Satoru Kōsaki at the suggestion of producer Yuma Takahashi.

Prior to the anime's broadcast, the production released a teaser PV in January 2021, followed by four weekly concept trailers in February, and further reveals during an AnimeJapan 2021 online special talk event in March.

The series was nominated as a reference candidate for the 53rd Seiun Award in the Media category and won Best Animation, Best Original Anime, and Music Anime of the Year at the 8th Anime Trending Awards.

The original prototype novels differ from the anime in several details, including Vivy's circumstances and the specifics of the Yoichi Aikawa assassination attempt; the novels also base AI behavior on the Three Laws of Robotics plus a Zeroth Law rather than the anime's 'mission' concept, and there are even inconsistencies in settings between the novel's first and second volumes due to the different writers.
