Apple TV+ issued a straight-to-series order for the show in January 2021, with Brie Larson attached to star and executive produce from the outset.

Brie Larson stars as chemist Elizabeth Zott, and other cast members including Lewis Pullman, Aja Naomi King, Stephanie Koenig, Patrick Walker, Thomas Mann, Kevin Sussman and Beau Bridges were added once production began in August 2022.

Metacritic gave the show a score of 68 out of 100 based on 30 critics, indicating 'generally favorable' reviews.

The series received two Golden Globe Award nominations, for Best Limited or Anthology Series and Best Actress in a Miniseries for Brie Larson, and in 2024 director Sarah Adina Smith won a DGA Award for the episode 'Her and Him'.
