Word of Honor is adapted from the danmei novel Faraway Wanderers (天涯客) by Priest, and the series was itself previously known under that same title before being renamed.

The series was filmed at Hengdian World Studios from June 3 to September 23, 2020, with a filming ceremony held the same day the main leads were announced.

Lead actors Zhang Zhehan and Gong Jun were announced together with the production team in June 2020, and a fan meeting was held on July 18 that year.

The series was pulled from Chinese streaming platforms in August 2021 after an industry-wide boycott against lead actor Zhang Zhehan, and it now remains available only on platforms outside mainland China such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Youku's YouTube channel.

On its premiere day, viewers spotted a filming blooper where a background extra could be seen secretly scrolling on their phone, which was left in the broadcast footage.

Costumes worn in the show were later auctioned off, with Gong Jun's red costume for the character Wen Kexing selling for the highest price at 220,000 yuan; proceeds were donated to the China Social Assistance Foundation's intangible cultural heritage protection charity project in the name of the show's fans.

A themed concert titled 'Born to Be Soulmates' was held on May 3-4, 2021 at the Suzhou Olympic Sports Centre gymnasium, featuring the main cast and OST singers; despite over 600,000 people trying to buy tickets for only 12,348 seats, all tickets sold out in just 14 seconds.
