The miniseries was filmed across three continents, with locations in Montreal, Bangkok, and Prague, and principal photography wrapped in July 2005.

Production was announced by Muse Entertainment Enterprises in April 2005, with a Canadian broadcaster to be confirmed shortly after filming began.

The New York Times praised the miniseries for avoiding 'seedy sensationalism' and called it a suspenseful thriller with a strong public-service message.

The Washington Post criticized the show as ironic, arguing that in exposing the scandal of trafficking it ended up exposing 'vast amounts of flesh' itself.

The Globe and Mail compared it unfavorably to the miniseries Sex Traffic, which had drawn direct links between the sex trade and NATO officials and Western corporations, and felt Human Trafficking was tailored to satisfy American viewers.

The closing title cards state that human trafficking is the third-most profitable criminal business in the world, with as many as 800,000 victims each year.

The Canadian two-disc DVD release included interviews with the director and the five principal cast members, while the U.S. single-disc release contained deleted scenes with enhanced violence that were not shown during the original Lifetime broadcast.
