Drag Race Down Under is the sixth international adaptation of the American series RuPaul's Drag Race, following the Chilean, Thai, British, Canadian, and Dutch versions.

The series premiered simultaneously on TVNZ 2 and TVNZ OnDemand in New Zealand, Stan in Australia, and WOW Presents Plus internationally on 1 May 2021, and is also available on BBC Three/BBC iPlayer in the UK and on Crave in Canada.

On March 11, 2024, WOW announced that RuPaul had stepped down as host and judge of the show, remaining only as executive producer, with Michelle Visage taking over as host and main judge starting from the fourth season.

Because RuPaul left the host and judge roles, the show dropped his name from the title, changing from RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under to simply Drag Race Down Under, mirroring other franchise editions where RuPaul is not the main host.

According to media reports, the second season began filming on 18 January 2022 and was scheduled to run through to 14 February 2022.

Judges Michelle Visage and Rhys Nicholson were spotted in south Auckland around the filming period of season two, fueling speculation that both would return to judge that season.

One recurring mini challenge focuses on 'reading,' a drag term for making comedic insulting observations about one's peers, a concept inspired by the documentary Paris Is Burning.

The show has produced companion web series, including How's Your Head, Queen? with Michelle Visage interviewing eliminated queens, Fashion Photo RuView co-hosted by Raja and Raven for season one, and Binge Queens with Kita Mean and other queens for season two.
