The miniseries adapts the 1966 Asterix album 'Asterix and the Big Fight', with its first episode loosely based on the illustrated story 'How Obelix Fell into the Magic Potion When He Was a Little Boy'.

Several characters and plot elements were altered or invented for the adaptation: Julius Caesar, who doesn't appear in the original comic, gets a pivotal role, and new female characters like Metadata, Apothika (a female Goth druid replacing the male druid Psychoanalytix), and Caesar's mother were added since the original story had no significant female characters.

Alain Chabat, a lifelong Asterix fan who had already directed the 2002 live-action hit 'Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra' (14 million admissions in France), had long dreamed of writing and directing an animated series, and chose to adapt 'The Big Fight' for Netflix.

The series was produced at TAT Productions studio in Toulouse with more than sixty animators, under animation director Kristof Serrand, a former DreamWorks artist.

To make the 3D animation as faithful as possible to Albert Uderzo's original art style (specifically between 'Asterix at the Olympic Games' and 'Asterix and the Laurel Wreath'), character designs by Alfonso Salazar were first sculpted by a sculptor before being turned into 3D models.

The fifth episode's post-credits segment, a 2D short called 'Mission Potager' in the style of Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, was produced by Xilam Animation instead of TAT Productions, and its co-director Fabrice Joubert had previously worked as an animator on 'Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit'.

Character names are filled with puns typical of Goscinny's style, such as Fastanfurius (referencing Fast & Furious), Annabarbera (Hanna-Barbera), Twinpix (Twin Peaks), and Mileycirus (Miley Cyrus), while Caesar repeatedly mispronounces Metadata's name as 'CompteInsta', 'Bigpharma' or 'Wikipedia'.

The series is packed with hidden pop-culture homages, including a Roman soldier morphing into R2-D2 after being hit, a mosaic referencing the 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' poster, Getafix mimicking the James Bond gun-barrel sequence and Michael Jackson's 'Smooth Criminal' pose, a Pulp Fiction dance between Getafix and Apothika, and action sequences echoing 'The Matrix Revolutions', 'Avengers: Endgame' and 'Revenge of the Sith'.

Production created a real fake website called 'Sanglier Danger' (referenced in a gag about boar protection in episode one) that fans could actually visit online.

Jamel Debbouze voices the character Sycophantix (Sucettalanix) as a nod to his role in Alain Chabat's 2002 film 'Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra', and the character's name references the Serge Gainsbourg song 'Les Sucettes'.

A scene where Caesar tosses a grape into his mouth and misses is a direct callback to a similar gesture performed by Alain Chabat as Caesar at the start of 'Mission Cleopatra'.

The series received generally positive reviews, earning a 4.3/5 rating from French critics on AlloCiné, and was praised in the US and UK press for its animation, humor, faithfulness to the comics, and political satire of authoritarianism.
