The series stems from a major multi-year production deal signed in July 2018 between Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan's Aggregate Films and Netflix, which at the time was the largest such partnership in the streamer's history.

Netflix gave Florida Man an eight-episode series order in April 2021 with Édgar Ramírez already attached to star.

Miguel Arteta, Julian Farino, Haifaa al-Mansour, and Kevin Bray were each set to direct two episodes of the series.

Despite being set in Florida, the series was actually filmed in Wilmington and Carolina Beach, North Carolina.

Principal photography began on August 10, 2021 and was originally scheduled to end on November 16, but filming was delayed and continued into December 2021.

The Pointe at Barclay, a shopping complex in Wilmington, was used as a filming location, with cargo containers, colorful buildings, and wooden structures brought in to dress the set.

Although eight episodes were originally ordered, the series ultimately premiered with only seven episodes on April 13, 2023.

The show received a poor critical reception, holding just a 22% approval rating with an average score of 5/10 on Rotten Tomatoes based on 9 critic reviews.
