The Cleaning Lady is an American adaptation developed by Miranda Kwok, based on the 2017 Argentine television series La Chica Que Limpia, with Warner Bros. Television Studios acquiring the remake rights in October 2019.

The pilot began filming on March 10, 2020, in New Mexico, but production was suspended just three days later due to the COVID-19 pandemic, delaying filming multiple times until it finally resumed in February 2021.

Shannyn Sossamon was originally cast in the lead role for the pilot but exited after the initial table read, and was replaced by Élodie Yung on April 6, 2020.

When Élodie Yung was cast, the ethnicity of her character was changed to match her own Cambodian background, while still incorporating aspects of Filipino culture into the show.

Vincent Piazza was originally cast in a main role for the pilot but dropped out, and Oliver Hudson was cast to replace him on July 13, 2021.

Ginger Gonzaga was initially cast in a main pilot role but was later replaced by Martha Millan when the series order was announced.

For season four, twins Sebastien and Valentino LaSalle, who had played Luca De La Rosa since the pilot, were recast and replaced by Khalen Roman Sanchez.

Actor Adan Canto, who played Arman Morales in seasons one and two, died on January 8, 2024, at age 42 from appendix cancer.

In January 2026, an arrest warrant was issued against Timothy Busfield for sexually abusing the LaSalle twins, whom he had met on the set of the show; the alleged abuse reportedly occurred between November 2022 and early 2024 and was first reported just after the twins were recast in November 2024.
