Origins

Time is a British anthology crime drama created and co-written by Jimmy McGovern with Helen Black, with each series presenting a new self-contained scenario set within His Majesty's Prison Service.

Casting

The first series starred Sean Bean and Stephen Graham, while the second series featured Jodie Whittaker, Tamara Lawrance, Bella Ramsey and Siobhan Finneran.

A third series was confirmed in November 2025, with Siobhan Finneran set to reprise her role from series two, joined by David Tennant.

Filming

Most of the filming for the first series took place in the Liverpool City Region, with prison wings and cells shot at HM Prison Shrewsbury, a real former prison decommissioned in 2013.

To build out the rest of the prison setting, production used courtrooms, police stations and educational buildings in Liverpool, plus exterior locations like the Silver Jubilee Bridge in Widnes and Southport Pier.

Reception

At the 2022 BAFTA TV Awards, the first series won Best Mini-Series and Sean Bean won Best Actor, while Stephen Graham was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

On Rotten Tomatoes, series one received a 100% approval rating from 23 critic reviews, while series two scored 93% from 15 reviews.

On Metacritic, series one scored 82 out of 100 indicating 'universal acclaim,' while series two scored 80 out of 100 indicating 'generally favorable' reviews.
