ABC ordered a pilot for the musical drama Queens in January 2021, created by Scandal writer and executive producer Zahir McGhee.

Tim Story, who directed the pilot episode, was announced in March 2021 to helm the project before it received a full series order in May 2021.

The four leads were cast in quick succession in early 2021: Eve in February, Naturi Naughton later that month, and Brandy Norwood and Nadine Velazquez on consecutive days in March, followed by Taylor Sele as Eric Jones.

The show's soundtrack was produced by Swizz Beatz, and the track 'The Introduction' was co-written by rapper Nas.

As part of the series' music rollout, Brandy Norwood recorded cover versions of Miley Cyrus' 'Wrecking Ball' and Bill Withers' 'Ain't No Sunshine'.

The promotional single 'Nasty Girl,' performed by the cast, was nominated for Outstanding Original Song at the 2022 Black Reel Awards for Television.

Despite earning a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and generally favorable reviews on Metacritic, ABC cancelled Queens after just one season in May 2022.

Both seasons of Queens were removed from Disney+ in 2022 as part of cost-cutting measures.
